Vaccines,however,arenotmagic;theydonothingtostopusbeingexposedtoavirusifsomeonesneezesoverus,andthisiswhyrestrictionsstillplayarole.Vaccinesdohelpreducetheopportunitiesforthevirustotakeholdandtheintensityofaninfection’saftermath,whilecuttingdowntransmission.Sofar,theyareestimatedtohavesaved12,livesinEnglandalone,andpreventedmorethan30,hospitalisations.Mostvaccinatedpeoplewillshowmildsymptomsornoneatallwheninfected.Butsymptomsmayalsodependonthevariant.

Thereisstillachancethatvaccinatedpeoplewillpasstheviruson,particularlyatsuper-spreadereventsandwithhighlytransmissiblevariants,suchastheDeltavariantnowpredominantintheUK.Asnewvariantsthatcarrymutatedspikeproteinsemerge,theeffectofourcurrentjabsmaybereducedandthevaccineswillrequireupdating.Butrightnow,thereisevidencethatourvaccinesareprotectiveagainsttheDeltavariant.

Sowhatdoesasafelevelofvaccinationlooklike,inordertoprotectthoseunabletohaveajabandachieveherdimmunity?Itdependsonthevirus,andthiscoronavirushasafewtricksupitssleeve.Atthebeginningofthepandemic,expertsestimatedthatabout70%ofthepopulationneededtobevaccinatedtokeepeveryonesafefromseveredisease,buttheDeltavariantismoretransmissiblethantheoriginalvirus,andthenewestimateiscloserto85%.
