MyfatherstoodinthekitcheneatingrefriedbeansfromthecanwithaforkasPaulSimonsang“Graceland”onrepeatfor20minutes.

“HeyAlexa,whydon’twetakeabreak,huh?”hefinallysaid,asifthespeakerwereachildwhohadtakentoomanyturnsontheslide.“Yeah,let’sgiveitarestforalittlebit.”

Iwatchedhimpetthedeviceandgentlyshushit.

“Alexa,turnoff,”Isaid,andthekitchenfellsilent.

Myfathergavemealook,thesamelookheusedtogivemewhenIwas10anddidn’twanttocallmygrandmotherorsendthank-youcardsaftermybirthdayparty.Alookofalessontoimpart.

“Yes?”Isaid.

“Nexttime,”hesaid,“sayplease.”

Myfatherhasalwaysbeenthetypeofpersonwholikeslisteningtobirdsandpickinguplitter.IgrewupadmiringthewayhewouldwalkintoaroomfulloffriendswatchingTVandask,“Whowantstotalk?”Hewantedtoknowwhatpeoplewerethinkingabout,andwhenphoneslitupatthedinnertable,hewouldsitandwatchastherestofushunchedandstaredatourlapslikephone-addictedzombies.

Itrytobemorelikemyfatherandmakethesevaluesmyown.Butthesecharacteristicsofhisarefadingalongwithhismemory,andthemeansthroughwhichIconnectwithhimfeellesslikebondingandmorelikedesperation.

Almostfiveyearsago,whenmyfatherwas62,helearnedhehadAlzheimer’sdisease.Overthistime,mymotherandIhavewatchedhisdecline.Heforgetshisfriends’namesandcannolongerread.Everymorning,hesitsinababybluepolka-dottowelandwaitsforoneofustoprompthimtostarthisday.
